Parent Coaching with Leigh Ellen aka the Inherent Parent Coach
What is parent coaching? It can be confusing to navigate what your family might need. What's the difference in a child therapist, play therapist, parent coach, psychologist, and psychiatrist? These are common questions. A psychiatrist usually prescribes medication, they are medical doctors who specialize in mental health medications. A psychologist may or may not provide counseling, but they often provide testing or psychological evaluations. These are helpful if you need a formal diagnosis for educational or professional accommodations or a disability claim.
A child therapist may do talk therapy or use some play activities with children to help them talk about their feelings and address any mental health concerns. A registered play therapist has extensive training in using play with children in therapy to treat mental health conditions. A parent coach acts as a consultant to support parents with tailored strategies, tools, and ideas they can use with their children. I happen to be a registered play therapist who is using all the information I've learned over the last 15 years working with children to support parents in parent coaching. When we talk about the differences in child therapy versus parent coaching, I like to break it down in differences in the need, the speed, and the lead, as shown below.
